Perils of West Sixth

According to a Statesman article:

On Sunday, John Smythe wrote in a blog that he managed to ride his bicycle home “without some drunk person trying to run me over.”

Four days later, he was struck and killed by a driver who police say was intoxicated.

We make note of this incident because it took place in our neighborhood and because Smythe, 35, was a resident of our neighborhood (but we didn’t know him), a graphic designer, and a blogger. We pause to think, but for the grace of God go we.

The driver in this incident left the scene but later called 911 to say that he thought he may have hit someone. The driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Smythe died from head trauma at Brackenridge Hospital not long after the accident.

This particular stretch of road between Lamar and MoPac is often a clusterfuck that often requires dodging cars that suddenly pull out of parking spaces or change lanes. We can’t imagine navigating that stretch of road on a bicycle! The traffic gets worse Thursday through Sunday as drivers leave the downtown bars.

Downtown Digest

West Lynn Cafe is Gone. Our neighborhood gourmet veggie place has been replaced by another vegetarian restaurant. The Dallas-based restaurant offers vegetarian plates with an Indian influence. [Statesman]

Wishing on a Falling Star. The Perseids meteor shower will peak tonight with up to 60 meteors an hour. Viewing should be best after last call 2 a.m. We’ll tell the cabbie to take the scenic route home and try to focus our eyes skyward.

Downtown Dwellings. Another condo project is in the works for downtown. This project makes use of the space intended for Intel’s parking garage (behind the existing shell). The plans call for a 420-unit condo tower at 300 Nueces St. Looks like our friend Taylor Andrews, principal of Andrews Urban, will be busying himself as the local development partner for this project.

Splash/Labor Day Weekend

We were giddy as a school girl yesterday afternoon to get a mailer announcing this year’s Splash/Labor Day Weekend parties! We were beside ourselves when it was announced earlier this year that there would be no Meltdown Party over Memorial Day Weekend–something about it not being cost-effective. Our little coin purse needed the break anyway. But we’re geared up for Labor Day Weekend! Apparently the “Perfect Day” moniker has been dropped. This year’s party is named Blü.

The Austin Outpost of the Guerrilla Queer Bar increases the entertainment options for the Austin gay community by allowing us to roam to venues outside of the half-dozen or so Authorized Gay Bars (TM). This is an opportunity to get creative, see the straight world together, and enjoy ourselves beyond the confines of the gay club scene.

“Don’t Clone, Colonize”
